Smith Family in Clarke Township

Nicholas Smith came to Clarke in about 1824 from Hastings County .In 1833 he received Patent for property south east of Shiloh United Church namely Lot 3 , Concession 4.He received this land as the son of a Loyalist, his father, Richard Smith.

Nicholas married Mary Ann Gilmore (Gilmour) and they raised six children.

1.Mary Ann Smith married John McMullen and they lived on the fifth concession of Clarke. The

McMullens had nine children but only Samuel, Thomas , Amos , and David remained in Clarke

Township.Their youngest daughter ,Mary Ann , settled in Manitoba .The others died at an early age.

2.Thomas Smith married Margaret Todd and they lived at Lot 3 , Concession 4 of Clarke. They had two sons , John and Joseph. John married Lucy Payne , daughter of neighbours Reuben and Eliza Payne. Joseph married Minnie Cooper of Orono.Both families went to Manitoba in the

1880`s to farm.

3.Amos Smith was the third child of Nicholas and Mary Ann. He married Jenny Johnson and they lived on the back part of the property raising nine children. Then in 1882 they all moved to

Manitoba. In 1883 Jenny died after giving birth to their tenth child so Amos had a large family to raise with the help of his older children.

4.George Smith married Eliza Gilroy and after her death he married her sister Margaret Jane

Gilroy. He lived east of Newtonville at Lot 5 ,Concession 2. There were 3 Smith sons-Elias ,

son of Eliza, later moved to Manitoba to farm, Samuel and Fred remained in Newtonville.

Sam married Maggie Palmer from Fenelon Falls . They had a son ,Roy , and a grandson, Carlos. Fred married Lila Emerson and they had a daughter , Laura, and a son , Sam.

5.Samuel Smith `s wife`s name was Sarah and they farmed in Clarke for a while but moved to Kent County some time after 1851. They had four children. James , Margaret and Lila were born in Clarke and Agnes was born in Dover Township in Kent County.

6.Richard Smith , the youngest member of the Smith family , married Mary Bullied and they lived on the back part of the property facing the fifth line just east of Shiloh Church. They had

two children , Lila who married Cecil Glass-two sons Lloyd and Raymond and George who married Dora Stapleton. Dora lived in Newcastle after leaving the farm.The Glasses lived in Kendal.

Linda Smith (my grandmother) was born in Manitoba to John and Lucy Smith but when Lucy died in 1890 Linda and her sister Ethel returned to Clarke to live with grandparents. Linda lived with the Smiths and Ethel lived with the Payne Family.

Linda married James Stone. They lived at Lot 3, Concession 4 , Clarke Township. They had three children-Helen married Douglas Ogden .They lived in Oshawa and had one daughter , Ruth.She

married Herbert Waite and they had one son Douglas.He married Susan Ryan and they have five children- Bailey , Madison , Clancy , and twins Dylan and Tayler ,of Oshawa.

-George was killed in a car crash in 1951

-Lewis married Audrey Rose . They lived in Peterborough.and had three children-

-Lanny ,Eric and Barbara..There are six Stone grandchildren - Terry , Jennifer ,Laura ,

Gregory ,Mallory and Jacquelin Linton.

 

Ethel Smith , sister of Linda ,also returned to Clarke and lived with the Payne family at Lot 3

Concession 3.She married Clarence Mitchell and they lived on the Mitchell Homestead at Broken Front Lot 7. They had a son John who married Jean Marvin.They had a daughter Vivian and a son Raymond.
