The population in 1869 was about 300 persons. Early settlers included the Mortimers, Steeles, Walkers, Smiths, Johnstons, Lindseys, Cobournes, and the Campbells. The 1869 Directory also includes Andrews, Avery, Buck, Burns, Clarke, Corbett, Dawkins, Dumble, Duroc, Frazer, Gainer, Gouldie, Harkness, Hayes, Hoople, Howie, Hyde, Langton, Leary, Ludgate, McErville, Mirphet, Nelson, Newell, Otto, Pearse, Phillips, Quigley, Ranson, Ross, Strahan and Turnbull.
