Glamorgan Township

Glamorgan Township, surveyed in 1862, was named after the Welsh Prince, Gwald Morgan. First into the township were the lumbermen, followed by homesteaders who settled along the Burnt River, Monck Road, or Buckhorn Road. The 1871 Peterborough County Directory notes that it was not settled at this time.

Early settlers in Glamorgan Township included J.M. Pickens, Samuel Wiley, Charles Way, Samuel Whittaker, Jimmy Scott, the Madills.

The village of Gooderham was established at the junction of Monck Road and Buckhorn Road, on the shores of Pine Lake. The first general store was operated by S.S. Hadley, and other merchants included Richard Davy and Jack Gould. The Gooderham hotel was operated by Andrew Young, saw-mills were owned by the Hunters and Halls.

Another early settlement on the Buckhorn Road was named Bear Lake, with Alsops, Grahams, Hales, and Haywards. Other early Glamorgan Township pioneers included the Deweys, McConnells, McColls, Dovells, and Madills.

The Milburn family settled along the Monck Road, and when they moved on to Gelert, the Curry family settled on the property.
