Sherborne Township

Sherborne Township was surveyed in 1862, and was named after the town of hometown of surveyor Thomas Ridout, in Dorsetshire, England. The first lumbermen entered the township in the late 1860's. The 1871 Peterborough County Directory records Sherborne Township as unsettled.

Early settlers in Sherbourne include the Coles, McIlroys, Shrigleys, McKays, and Claytons at Dorset. The Gilmour lumber depot was located at Dorset.

By 1883 settlers included Bowman Cowel, Matthew McGaw, G. Allan Phillips, James B. Shrigley, Francis Hoover, Alvin Phillips, and William Stamp.
