Snowden Township was surveyed in 1859, and takes its name from the most lofty mountains of Wales, which stand 3571 feet above the sea. The first settlers in Snowdon included S.S. Peck, J.B. Edmison, Henry Edmison, Richard McCracken, W.B. Brower, Stephen Moore, R.C. Garratt, Archibald Scott, Robert Ritchie, Henry Agglestone, John Scheffee, David Roxborough, and David and Andrew Chalmers.
The 1861 census showed a population of about 200 persons. As was the case for many Haliburton 'frontier' townships, a great number of the early settlers came from townships to the south in Peterborough and Victoria Counties. Other early settlers included the Newells, McElwains, Sedgewicks, and Milburns. Some families arrived from Prince Edward County, including the Pringles, Hicks, and Minakers.
The 1871 Peterborough County Directory gives the population as about 400. In addition to the above family names we find David Armstrong, Amos Arnold, Emanuel Ashworth, David Barr, John Black, Henry Boss, B.P. Boulby, Daniel Bowen, David Bright, J.R. and James Calvert, William Carroll, J.N. Clapp, Joseph Congdon, Alex and William Dawson, William Dixon, Adam Donley, James Drake, Henry Ferguson, R.C. and W.B. Garratt, John Gase, J.N. Gidley, R.C. Haight, James and R.B. Hamilton, Alex Hartle, John Harlow, John, Thomas, and William Herron, F.R.E. Holly, William Hollowell, John Houston, B.Z. Johnston, Stern Kindrick, Joseph Knowles, William Lindsay, John Long, Simeon Lott, Gordon and John Loucks, William Miles, Enoch Mitchell, E.B. and Samuel Munn, John Otto, Henry Phillips, Asa Potter, William Reynolds, Alonso Stata, John Thompson, George Waite, and John and J.D.
