James BRADY, was born in the Parish of Devenish in the County of Fermanagh, Ulster Province, Northern Ireland in about 1784. He was married to Ellen GALLAGHER. He emigrated to Canada in 1841 , bringing with him seven sons and two daughters as follows: Peter BRADY, b. abt. 1810, married Bridget McMANUS ; Ann BRADY, b. abt 1811; John Brady, b abt. 1814,married Loretta? ; William, birthdate unknown; Ellen, birthdate unknown; Patrick BRADY, b. abt 1826; Farrel BRADY, b. abt. 1829, married Bridget CONROY & Julia CONROY ; Terence BRADY, b. abt 1830, married Mary MCGUIRE; and 1 more son (possibly Edward). All of the above children were born in Northern Ireland. The family settled in Haldimand Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada. James was about 60 years old when he came to Canada. There is no mention of his wife in either his obituary or any of the census records where James appears. I can only speculate that she (Ellen) died prior to the emigration of the family. James first appears in the 1842 Canadian Census as being the head of a household. The BRADYs (James and sons) owned land in Lots 13 and 14 in Concession 9 and Concession 10. Lands were sold in 1898 to Thomas MACKLIN to settle an estate. James BRADY is listed on the 1871 Canadian Personal Census, page 23, as a farmer in Northumberland County, Haldimand Township. His age is listed as 87. James BRADY died on June 26, 1872 and was survived by sons John, Patrick, Farrel, Terence and daughter Ellen. His death notice appeared in the Cobourg Sentinel on June 29, 1872. The obituary stated that he was nearly sixty when he arrived in Ontario, but was well preserved and had an energy and will seldom exhibited by someone his age. The notice goes on to speak of his sons noting that they were all well to do farmers. James BRADY was buried at Burnley Cemetery in Ontario, Canada. This cemetery no longer exists and family oral history says that all Bradys were moved from Burnley to Warkworth Cemetery at some time. Descendants of James BRADY have married into the following families: CAMPBELL, CUNNINGHAM, FANNING, DALY, JOHNS, CONROY, MCGUIRE,DRUMM.
