BRUNSONs of Percy Township
Contributed by: Karen E. BLACK at Barnabas Brunson (1744-1822) immigrated to Percy Township, Northumberland Co in the 1790s when he was already a middle-aged man. He was a descendant of Richard BRONSON/BRUNSON, one of two brothers, who helped found Farmington, Connecticut in the 1640s. Barnabas settled on Lot 24 in Concession 2 along the Percy/Seymour Township border with his second wife, Hannah. The foundation of the house he built was small, but he had left his two youngest sons behind him in the States: 1) Abel, who pioneered in South Stockton, Chatauqua, New York and 2) Phylanien, about whom nothing is known. Three of his five grown children accompanied him to Upper Canada, though. His only daughter, Levineah, is believed to have married Reubin MALLORY. Her family remained in Ontario. Barnabas' oldest son, Amasa, also acquired property in Percy Township, but his movements after 1800 are uncertain.
Amasa's son, Barnabas Jr., is believed to be the grandson who inherited Barnabas Sr's Percy Twp property in 1822. A fourth son, Orsonus, is known to have settled in Dundee, Quebec. Barnabas' grandchildren intermarried with the neighbouring MASTERS and TRIPP families in Percy Township. At least one of them, my three times great-grandfather, Barny BRUNSON, referred to his birthplace as "Crammie". Judging by the contents of his will, Barnabas farmed for a living. Some of his descendants remained on the Percy Twp property until well into the 1900s. However, there are no tombstone markers or church records to mark their presence. Only Barnabas' will and some land records confirm the existence of the BRUNSONs in Percy Twp prior to the first census.
