Thomas GAINFORTH b. c. 1781 in Wexford, Ireland; d. after 1871 in Huron Co., ONT married to Sarah BUTLER or JONES in Ireland. They arrived in U.S. in 1815. Their son, Thomas, was born in New York Harbor. In the Ontario Archives Land Patent Index, Thomas is listed as follows: GAINFORTH, Thomas Murray Twp.. lot FR 1/2 9, Conc. 2, issue date 1837.
In the 1851 census, Thomas and Sarah are living with their son, James, in Brighton #2, page 103. In the 1861 census, Thomas and Sarah are living with their son Thomas in Brighton #1. page 28. By 1871, the census shows Sarah has died and Thomas is living with his son, Thomas, in Huron Co., Ontario. The other son, James is still living in Brighton #3. page 28, and his decendants still live there today. Thomas Jr. eventually removed to Michigan where his descendants can be found in Tuscola Co., Michigan.
It is unknown if there were other children. I am currently (February 7, 1999) checking out the possibility that Ann GANFORTH BARNUM and Fidelia GAINFORTH RYCKMAN were sisters to Thomas Jr. and James.

PEARSONs of Brighton
John F. PEARSON, (ca 1814 - ca 1876/81) and wife, Elizabeth ?, are listed in the 1861 census. He was a ship carpenter in 1861. He and his wife eventually had at least seven children: Emanda (b ca 1849 US), Petruna (b ca 1851 US), Eliva (b ca 1854 US), Alvida (b ca 1856 US), Arthur Wesley (b 16 Sep 1868 ON), Effie (b ca 1867 ON), and Minnie (b ca 1877). They moved to Brighton village from New York. Anecdotal evidence suggests that they were "Pennsyvlania Dutch", German, etc. - even though the PEARSON name hardly appears so.
I'm anxious to find genealogical connections to all the daughters in this family and to John and Elizabeth's parents. We have full descendancy information on Arthur who made his way to British Columbia and married into a pioneering BC family called TOOPS.
