Abner and Eunice SPENCER |
Abner was born 12 april,1769 in East Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island. He migrated with
brother Corey to Upper Canada and they both settled in Picton,Prince Edward Co. They had spent
several years in Dutchess Co., New York where their father, Thomas M., had died in 1795. After
returning from a trip to the West Indies in 1797, he sold his farm of 200 acres and with wife, Eunice,
moved to Haldimand Township. Abner settled on Concession 1, lot 23 July 3,1797 and patent was
isssued May 17,1802 (200acres). Abner and Eunice raised a family of approx. 9-10 children (5 of
which were daughters and 5 sons). The only names found tied to Abner/Eunice were
Thomas,Caleb,Henry and William (b. August 20, 1820). A few years after Abner's death July
30,1834, Eunice moved with her family to Cramahe Township and on Oct.22,1839 purchased lots
25, 26 Concession 10. Eunice died July 23, 1857 and was buried in Methodist Burial Ground in
Grafton along side of Abner. She left Lot 26 to William and Lot 25 to Henry. Henry married Mary
GOHEEN in 1857 and later moved to Sanilac County,Michigan where he died in 1871. William
(from whom I am descended) married Lucy PALMER Oct.20, 1843 and they had two sons: Gilbert
and Albert*. William sold his land Nov.1, 1861 and he later died August 30, 1870 in Colborne from
"brain fever" and no trace has been found of his son Gilbert. Albert was found in 1871 census in
Percy Township where he met his wife. He later moved with wife Sophronia Jane VINCENT, son
William* , and daughter Bertha back to Cramahe Township in 1885 and settled on Concession 7 .
Albert's third child, George Clarence Spencer, died at the age of two from hooping cough in 1887.
William became proprietor of the Spencer Garage in Castleton until the late 1950'S. and Bertha later
