FISHER, DODS, HARE, ASH, SMITH, LISCUMHamilton Township:I am seeking information regarding the family of James FISHER, who lived in or near Cobourg from 1815-1840. James' wife was Leah DODS. I have little information on their family, except for the youngest son, John F. FISHER. They had James Field (1780); Mary (1782- m. someone named HARE); Elizabeth (1784 - m. someone named ASH in Cobourg); Sarah (1786 - m. John SMITH in the US, never moved to Cobourg; Samuel (1788); Henry (1791); and John F. (1793).John F. married Elizabeth LISCUM in Cobourg on 13 Jan 1823. I have info on their descendants, especially after they left Cobourg for Redford, MI near Detroit. I am seeking 1) further information about the Scottish background of James FISHER, and 2) information as to the Alexander FISHER listed on the Canada GenWeb as a settler in Cobourg. Was Alexander related to James? If father-son or brothers, is there another relative who knows the background? Thanks for your help. Reply to: Donald W. FISHER at dwfrft@mindspring.com Posted: 11 June 1998, To FINDER LISCUM, FISHERHamilton Township:I am seeking family information and earlier family data about the Samuel LISCUM family. They resided in Cobourg beginning in 1817, having come from NY.Samuel LISCUM was married to Hannah House LISCUM. I do not have info about their older children, but two of the younger ones were Elizabeth (Betsey) Liscum FISHER, and her brother, Lewis LISCUM. Betsey married John F. FISHER on 13 Jan 1823 in Cobourg. They left Cobourg in 1840 for Redford, MI, near Detroit, taking John's widower father, James, with them. Some of their siblings must have remained in Cobourg. Nothing is known about the deaths of Samuel and Hannah House LISCUM. If someone has information about these folks or other LISCUM children, I would be most appreciative to know about it. I have a lot of data on the descendants of John F. and Betsey Liscum FISHER, which I am willing to share with interested parties. .Reply to: Donald W. His name is Denny/Dennis/Daniel HERALD. Deny, Denny, Diny as he was called, married Margaret DEVLIN in 1843 at Donegal, Ireland. According to some obituaries, their children were born in Read, Belleville, Ontario, but oral sources say they were born in Melrose, Tyendinga Township of Hastings County. Daniel, the father, is believed to have died about 1877-1879. Some of the children immigrated to Wisconsin and others to New York. Rennells at rennells@ismi.net Posted: 18 July 1998, To FINDER SACKVILLEHAMILTON Township:I would like to hear from anyone with knowledge of, or an interest in SACKVILLE families who lived in the vicinity of Bewdley, Hamilton Township, Northumberland County, Ontario in the 1800s. Early census data suggests they settled in the area in the 1830s. It seems there was a John and Agnes SACKVILLE born in the 1780s and four grown sons: (1) James, born about 1806, died about 1879, m1. Jane GIBB who died before 1842, m2. Jean THOMPSON in 1842. They had a sawmill at Bewdley; (2) William, born abt 1808; (3) George, born about 1812, m. Margaret TURNBULL; and (3) John, born about 1815 and m. Eliza HOLROYD.The descendants of these SACKVILLEs have spread throughout Canada and the US, but the surname is still rather rare. Some of the related surnames (spouses) are: TURNBULL, CRUSE, JOHNSON, ROWSON, SIDEY, RANDALL, NORTHCOTT, MILLSON, BENSON, CROOK, PORTER, RICHARDS, SANDERSON, MORTON, LEAN, LANDER, WESTINGTON, EAGLESON, SPICER. Family tradition suggests they came to Canada from the England-Scotland borders, but in five years of searching, I have not been able to find the SACKVILLE name in any records of Scotland or Northern England in the 1700s or 1800s. Family folklore mentions the following as possible places or origin: "shep farmers in the Cheviot Hills", "near the River Tweed", "Dumfries, Scotland", and "Berwickshire, Scotland". I have more information on descendants of these SACKVILLEs (I am one) and would very much like to make contact with anyone who has interest in this family.
