CRONKHITE, PEEBLES, WALKERAbraham CRONKHITE Sr and wife Mary, came from upstate NY to Canada around 1792, bringing with them at least two small children: Abraham Jr (b. 1789) and Samuel (b. 1791). They lived in Fredericksburg, L&A Co, for a while, but had been granted land in Percy Township, Northumberland Co and appeared to go between these two locations. In 1796, they had Jacob (b. in Fredericksburg) and soon Nicholas (b. 1800 in Fredericksburg). Nicholas and Samuel were given their father's land in Percy Twp after his death in the late 1830s. They each had 100 acres of the land. Samuel fared better, and also had land up in Brighton Twp, likely from receiving land from service performed in the War of 1812. Nicholas had married Elizabeth (nee Walker??) in 1831 presumably in Fredericksburg, and had the following children: Abraham, Mary, Frances, Thomas, Samuel, Abram, Mary (2), and Laurenzo D.. In 1862, Thomas (age 22) and Laurenzo (age 8) moved to Oswego County, NY to start their lives; we have info from Thomas' descendents, but little on Laurenzo. Abraham, son of Nicholas, stayed in Percy Twp for his entire life, with wife Matilda, and had children: Hamilton and Christina (the latter whom moved to Oswego later in her life.) Around 1862, Elizabeth died and Nicholas remarried to Marjory PEEBLES. They had the following children: William, James, Elizabeth, Sally, Rose and Charlotte. In the early 1880s, Nicholas died, and because of their financial straits, most of the younger children were sent away to homes that could care for them. My great-grandmother, Rose, stayed in touch with her older brother, Will, and her younger sister, Lottie, but nothing is known of the others. If you think you may have any information on these people or any CRONK/HITES from this area, please email me at:
