WILLIAM W. DEAN, County Court Judge of the County of Victoria, is a native of Canada, having been born in London, Ontario, in 1830, the son of Rev. Horace Dean, a Wesleyan Methodist clergyman. He was educated at Victoria University, where he took the degree of B.A.; studied law with Hon. Lewis Wallbridge, Q.C., and was called to the bar, Michaelmas term, 1859. Having been appointed to his present position in 1874, he has since continued to discharge the duties pertaining thereto with marked ability and impartiality, and is looked upon in every quarter as one of the most useful members of the Judiciary; while as a private citizen and gentleman he commands the highest degree of esteem.
LIEUT.-COLONEL JAMES DEACON, of Lindsay, is of Irish nativity, having first seen light in the ever green Isle in 1824. His life has been in a great measure spent upon the "tented field," and he has served with credit and distinction in many campaigns and many climes. He was Captain in the Royal Scots Regiment of Foot, in which corps he served in the Mediterranean, and East and West Indies, including the Crimean campaign under Lord Raglan. He also served in the capacity of Staff Adjutant in the detached force under Sir Colin Campbell, afterwards Lord Clyde. Having settled in the County of Victoria in 1866, he has since that time been one of the leading citizens of the County town. He has served at the Municipal Board, during several years of which time he occupied a seat in the County council. He has also filled the civic chair with satisfaction to his constituents. He takes a great interest in Canadian military affairs, and has been a number of years the Lieut.-Colonel in command of the 45th Regiment, Volunteer Militia, being considered in military circles one of the most valuable officers of the Canadian force.
WILLIAM GRACE, of Lindsay, has been for a long time numbered among the chief citizens of the County Town of Victoria County. He is a native of County Kilkenny, Ireland, having settled in this county in 1854. Since this time he has been prominently identified with every public question affecting the welfare of his adopted town. He was many years in the Municipal Council, and has been closely identified with local educational affairs, having been a number of years chairman of the Board of Education. He is at present Deputy-Clerk of the Crown and Pleas, Clerk of the County Court, and Registrar of the Surrogate Court for Victoria County; and has the reputation of being a most efficient and courteous public servant.
R. ADAM, of Woodville, Mariposa Township, is the son of James and Hanna Adam, who came here from Ayrshire, Scotland. The subject of this sketch was born July 12, 1832, at Quebec. He came here in 1848, and has held municipal offices since 1871. At the present writing Mr. Adam is Reeve of Mariposa.
