The settlement of Brant County began around 1793, in what is now Burford Township. The latest settled township was Onondaga, where first settlement began in 1836.
In 1851 the County of Brant was established consisting of townships if Brantford, Onondaga, Tuscarora, Oakland, South Dumfries, and Burford. Brantford and Paris were the largest towns.
Towns and villages in Brant County include Brantford, Langford, Northfield Centre, Falkland, Harrisburg, Hatchley Station, Mt.Vernon, Paris Station, Scotland, Burford, St.George, Cainsville, Fairfield Plain, Onondaga, Glen Morris, Harley, Burtch, Paris, New Durham, Mohawk, Rosebank, Oakland, Newpoet, Conboyville, Ohsweken, Cathcart and Tuscarora.
Prominent among early settlers were Alexander and John Westbrook, who were first captured in the USA by Mohawks, and brought to the Brant area, then exchanged for prisoners, and subsequently returned to settle near Brantford.
Other early settlers included John File, William Reynolds, W.K. Smith, Wheeler Douglas, Mordecai Westbrook, Eliakim Malcolm, Henry Ellis, Allin Ellis, Amos Sturgis, Thomas Sturgis, Malcolm Brown, Thomas Perrin, Hiram Westbrook, Haggai Westbrook, Ezra Hawley, Isaac Winegarden, Findlay Malcolm, John Oles, Jacob A. Smith, George Cunningham, Matthew Messecar, Stephen Burtch, Lawrence Davis, Wellington McAllister, David Burtch, Robert Biggar, James Biggar, Hamilton Biggar, Herbert Biggar, James Lacey, Constan Eddy, Daniel Southwick, Thomas Armstrong, John Rosebaugh, Adam Elliott, Jonathon Thomas, Henry Cunningham, Zacharia Clump, Andrew Vanevery, Lewis German, Francis Fairchild, Jacob Bonham, Peter Malcolm, Edwin Sayler, Jonah Howell and Nathaniel Mainwaring.
