Carleton County Historical Pioneer Ancestor Settlement Maps

The townships of Carleton County are March, Torbolton, Gloucester, Marlborough, Huntley, Osgoode, Nepean and Fitzroy.

Marlborough township is the most southerly in the County, and was first surveyed by Theodore De Pencier, a United Empire Loyalist in 1791. The Burritt family, Stephen, Edmund and Daniel were the first settlers in Marlborough in 1793. Another loyalist Asahel Hurd came with the Burritts. In 1796 William Bullis and Richard Olmstead arrived from New York state. In 1798 David Grant settled Lot 24. The early years of the 1800's saw settlers arrive including Joshua Losey, Duncan Grant, Abel Runnalls, Richard Fisher, Mr. Norton, the Goods, Moores, Dempseys, Dunbars and John Pierce.

Torbolton township is the smallest and most northerly township in the County. John Buckham, Captain Baird, Lieut. White and Lieut. Ibbitson were were the first settlers in the township in 1824. 1825 saw the arrival of David Mclaren, James and Elizabeth Weir and Archibald Stirling. In 1826 Welton Slack, Thomas Truckle and William Aldridge settled. By 1834 settlers were William Cahill, C. Keegan, James Grierson Jr. Patrick Dolan, John McDonnell, David McLaren, James McLaren, John Brown, William Ross, Robert Dolan, Andrew Hawley, Hugh Gibson,Robert Richards, Alexander Munro, William Munro, John Buckham, James Hawley, John Headley, John Grierson, D. Baird, James Grierson, Henry Penny, George Young, Henry Flood, Jeremiah Taylor, William Slack, Leonard Shouldice, Walton Slack and William Aldridge.

Fitzroy township is located in the most north-westerly portion of Carleton County. The first settlement of the township was made in 1818-19 by Charles Shireff, whose family originally settled Port Hope area. The first saw mill was built in 1825 by Alexander McMillen and Donald Dingwall. Settlers arriving next included Richard McArthur, John Landon, John Marshall, Herman Landon, Andrew Dickson, Andrew and John (died 1825) Forbes, William Forbes, Thomas McCormick, Edward Owens, John Grant, Thomas Fraser, Alexander McMillen, Cornelius Gleeson, the Halliday family, Henry Willis, John Marshall, James Keating, Henry Morehouse, John Seely, Squire McVicar, Squire Richie, The Russell family, the Lowery and Hamilton families.

Gloucester township is situated in the north-east part of the County, and was first settled by Bradish Billings and Ira Honeywell 1812-13. In the summer of 1819 Andrew Wilson, the Doxeys and Otterson families settled. Further arrivals were the Johnston family, Hugh McKenna, William Smyth, John Holden (drowned 1829), the Hollister and Carman families, John Cunningham, Hugh McKenna, J.Telford, Thomas Doxey, John Brush, W. Griffith and W. Doxey.

Goulbourn township lies in the south-west of the County and was first settled by the military settlers of 1818.

Huntley township was first settled 1825 by John Manion, Thomas Mordy, John Kenned and James and Martin Manion. The Peter Robinson settlers of Huntley in 1825 included John Forrest, James White and Patrick O'Keefe. The Carp settlement of 1819-20 included John Cavanagh, William Mooney, Alex Workman, Henry Mcbride, David Cavanagh, William Erskine, William Montgomery, the Campbells, James and Hugh Doring, the Argue brothers, the Hodgins and David and John Lowery. More pioneer settlers in the Carp area included Samuel and Stephen Morehead, George Carter, David Kennedy, William Cram, John McEwan, Thomas McCord, Joseph Simpson, William Hayes, Dennis Hogan, Thomas Rivington, John Coburn, Roger Wilton, Richard Williams, W. Lusk, Thomas Murphy, William Johnston, and William and Andrew Maxwell.

Pioneer settlers arrived in March townhip 1819 and included Captain Laudel, Col. Lloyd, Captain Monk, Mr. Pinhey/Pinly, Thomas Reid, Captain Weatherly, Captain Street, James Reid, Daniel Beatty, Captain Cox and Captain Stephens.

Following years arrivals included John Armstrong, Jacob Graham, Frederick Richardson, Michael Gleason, Thomas and George Morgan, Captain Logan, John Boucher, Dennis Killean, George Hedge, John Lewis, John Wall, George Clarke, Enoch and Beacham Scharf, William English and John Jones.

Much of Nepean township was given to U.E. Loyalists or their children, most of whom never saw their lands, instead hoping to profit by a later day sale. One of the earliest settlers in 1809-10 was Ira Honeywell, who was given 1000 U.E.L. acres by his father Rice Honeywell. Later settlers include Abraham Dow, Roger Moore, Samuel and Marble Dow, Lewis Williams, William Thompson, Thomas and William Burrows and George McConnell.

The first settlers to enter North Gower in 1820 were Stephen Blanchard, Debra Beaman and Richard Garlick. These were followed by Peter Jones and the Eastman families, William McEwan, Andrew Christie, Stephen Covell, John Mains, John and James Wallace, John Clark, Michael Myers, John Hazleton, Robert Snay, M.D. Reilly and James Lindsay.

Osgoode township is the most easterly in the County, and was first settled in 1826-27 by Archibald McDonnell and William York of Cornwall. Following in 1827-28 were Richard Hall and Samuel Loney. Later years saw the arrival of Robert Grant, Peter McLaren, Donald McIntosh, Squire Hanna, John McNab, Duncan Cameron, Colin Campbell, Dennis Kearns, Henry Brown, John Farlinger and Thomas Bailey.
